This document answers Frequently Asked Questions about:
I maintain a separate “how to navigate” document that is also linked from the Navigation section of the left hand links bar.
1. Didn’t you have a different web address before?
I used to maintain a web site on my old Power Mac 7200/90, when I had a high speed connection to the Internet. It wasn’t a particularly robust site, since it was run using Personal Web Sharing under Mac OS 8.x, but it was pretty stable and helped me start to think about structuring web content. I’ve since moved on to bigger and better things.
2. Yeah, about that. Didn’t you have another web address more recently?
Yes, at MIT (http://www.mit.edu/~tjarrett/). And also at Editthispage.com.
3. Why did you change providers? And what happened to your MIT page?
Editthispage.com was never meant to be a hosting service, more a proof of concept to show what Manila could do. The server used to fall over regularly, and it didn’t offer nice things like static rendering. MIT pulls the plug on your account a semester after you graduate, so that site is gone now. I’ve done my best to merge the two sites together on this new site, but there may still be screwy bits.
4. Who hosts your site now? and why are there two addresses?
The host for jarretthousenorth.com is Weblogger. They made migrating my Manila site really painless and I can’t recommend them enough. There are two addresses because I am rendering the website to a static server (http://www.jarretthousenorth.com/) to take some of the load off the Manila server. Manila (http://discuss.jarretthousenorth.com/) still runs the discussion groups, the RPC interface (where I write the content), and some dynamic content like the lists of news items by category).
5. What the hell is up with your layout?
I just changed the layout to use CSS instead of tables. If you’re having problems and you’re on a modern browser, email me. There aren’t any significant problems that I’m aware of.
6. What’s does the site logo graphic represent?
The photo in the site logo is not the Jarrett house, or even a Jarrett house. I took the picture in 1998 or 1999 on the Manassas battlefield in Northern Virginia. The house is a dwelling that survived the battle, despite heavy fire. Something about the day and the picture spoke to me, and I used it as the navigation graphic for the whole site in the previous iteration. When I was looking for a new site logo graphic, this one leapt out at me. I think the appeal of the graphic is a combination of nostalgia (I took the photo the fall before I left Virginia for business school) and aspiration (the desire for a house, and a family, that would last through war, fire, and time).
7. Where are you now?
Having finished my MBA at MIT Sloan, I spent two years at Microsoft on Microsoft.com; for details please see this post. I have since relocated back to Boston and am wrapping up my first year as a product manager at iET Solutions.
8. I keep seeing stuff about QTN. What’s up with that?
QTN stands for Quick Tasting Notes. I wanted to set the beer tasting notes apart from the other Cucina content without creating another department for them. The full list of Quick Tasting Notes can be found on the Greatest Hits page.
9. Didn’t I see you on another site somewhere?
It’s entirely possible. You can always check the list of all my formal affiliations; it used to live in my nav bar until things got entirely too out big to load on every page.
